The University of Canterbury had a problem. Following the 2011 Christchurch earthquakes, student numbers were falling- they needed a marketing push to increase enrolment numbers.
We were tasked with making an app to increase the experience of current students, staff and visitors- as well as attracting new ones. They wanted an app, but one that people actually needed, rather than what management assumed people wanted. Following a user experience process, we explored the needs and interest of the various stakeholders, and proposed a navigational app to the board.
For the initial planning, some of the tools we used included:
- User Personas
- Affinity Mapping
- User Interviews
For the wireframes we used the following tools, which allowed us to present a working prototype to the board:
- POP (prototyping on paper)
- Adobe Photoshop/Illustrator
- Invision
- Proto.io
- UX Pin
The published app was developed as a hybrid app (HTML/CSS/JS) with SQL Lite for the backend, wrapped using PhoneGap/Cordova and released for Android/iOS early 2015. Here is the promo video:
A better write-up for this project has been done by my friend Charles, so check it out here.
